Charles Leclerc lines up in P2 for the Miami Sprint race today. He admitted in his post qualifying interview that he was pleased with this result, saying his hard work “paid off.”

The season so far has seen Leclerc struggle with his qualifying performances. A surprising fact, considering he is seen as one of the fastest drivers over one lap.

However, Leclerc struggled to warm and prepare his tyres in the first few races this season. Resulting in him being outperformed by teammate Carlos Sainz.

Coming into Miami, the Monegasque driver was looking for a strong weekend as he mused,

Leclerc mused, ‘you are only as good as you last race.’

Miami was also special as it marks the second sprint race, meaning all drivers only had one free practice session to gather as much data as possible before being through into the sprint shootout.

Unfortunately, Charles Leclerc’s FP1 session ended because of a spin that got him stuck and could not reverse his car because of an overheated clutch. He watched on from the sidelines after completing just one lap.

In light of that, Leclerc entered qualifying on the back foot because of the limited running. Which he said was “very, very tricky.”

The Monegasque got the tyres in the window and put his blue Ferrari in P2. When asked about his lap he said, “Straight away I felt the feeling and the hard work that I’ve done earlier in the season to try and get the tyres in the right window have paid off.”

Leclerc also acknowledged that the hard work is not over. Saying, “but now I need to work on the consistency and try to stay at that level.”

When asked what he thought he could achieve starting next to max, Charles Leclerc had high hopes for the sprint race, “P1?”

Despite setting his sights on P1, he admitted he had. “No idea about our race pace,” because of his FP1 being cut short. Although he hoped for a “good sprint and a good race pace, with hopes for the win on Sunday.”

The sprint race takes place at 5pm for UK viewers with the main race qualifying at 9pm.
