Ferrari have announced they are bringing “fresh and unexpected colours” to the Miami GP. The design will display Azzurro La Plata and Azzurro Dino – two historic shades of blue for Ferrari.

Miami marks the 70th anniversary of Ferrari in North America. To mark this milestone, Ferrari plan to bring an ode to their history in the US.

The livery is due to be revealed in Florida before the Miami GP. The launch date has not been announced yet, but the design has been hinted at.

The two shades of blue to feature have both been seen in Ferrari’s long history in racing.

The deeper blue, Azzurro Dino, was worn by Arturo Merzario and Clay Ragazzino in 1974. It was also the colour of Maranello uniforms.

Ragazzino was the last driver to sport the deep blue. Ferrari then transitioned to white and then to their now classic red.

The lighter blue, Azzurro La Plata, Alberto Ascari, was worn when he became Ferrari’s first champion, sporting both a light blue race suit and helmet.

John Surtees, Lorenzo Bandini, Ludovico Scarfiotti and Chris Amon, all wore the blue. Niki Lauda also famously sported this shade during his premiere season with the prancing horses.

Although blue may not be as memorable as the ‘Rosso Corsa’ red we so heavily attribute to the Maranello team, it is still a historic colour for the team.

Not the first blue Ferrari

In 1964, Enzo Ferrari protested the FIA for refusing to give approval for the ‘250 LM’ to race in sports cars.

He handed back his competitor’s license.

Subsequently, the final 2 rounds of F1 saw the Ferrari entered by the North American Racing Team (N.A.R.T.) with a blue and white livery. John Surtees won the championship that year, in the blue and white machinery, wearing Azzurro De Plata.

This will be the inspiration behind the design for Miami.

It will also mark the first special livery of the season for the Maranello team and the first blue livery since 1964.
