In a post-race interview with Nico Rosberg for Sky UK, China’s rising star Guanyu Zhou shared his profound emotional experience during the Chinese Grand Prix, highlighting both the highs and lows of the race weekend.

Zhou, who raced fiercely but did not manage to secure points, spoke candidly about the overwhelming support from the local fans and the palpable change in the atmosphere at the Shanghai circuit.

“Man, I have no words, honestly. The crowds, how the fans just react the whole weekend. It’s just been so emotional, so honoured to be here,” Zhou expressed.

Despite his evident disappointment at not finishing in a points-paying position, Zhou remained upbeat about his performance and the progress he has made.

“I’m happy to complete the Grand Prix, but drove my heart out today. Unfortunately, not enough for the points. We go again next time,” he said.

Rosberg commended Zhou on his resilience and adaptability, especially considering the challenges presented by starting further back in the grid.

“I think today with the car that you have, you still did a fantastic job out there,” Rosberg affirmed.

Reflecting on his journey and the broader implications for motorsport in China, Zhou is optimistic about the future. He sees his role as pivotal in inspiring a new generation of Chinese drivers.

“Looking at them, I’m sure it’s growing. Hopefully in the future, more and more drivers can be from my country, can be stepping in here,” Zhou stated.

Zhou’s gratitude towards the fans and his determination to succeed at the highest levels of motor racing resonated throughout the interview.

“I’m just so grateful to have all of them that are here supporting since the first day, Friday,” he remarked.

Zhou’s ambassadorial role is key to fostering greater interest and participation in Formula 1 within China. His heartfelt words, “a day to remember, a weekend to remember, just so honoured,” encapsulate a truly momentous occasion for him and the thousands of Chinese fans who cheered him on throughout the weekend.
