The second free practice session of the Formula E Tokyo E-Prix weekend saw improved track conditions, with the circuit fully drying out and enabling teams and drivers to push their cars to the limit. The session kicked off with Envision’s Sebastien Buemi setting an early pace with a lap of 1:29.412s, but the field quickly eclipsed this time as the track conditions improved and drivers became more accustomed to the debuting Tokyo track layout.
Tokyo E-Prix Session Intensifies with Red Flag Interruptions
The session was briefly halted due to Lucas Di Grassi crashing into the wall and scattering debris from his ABT car on the track. At the restart, it was Andretti’s Norman Nato who first dipped into the 1:20s, showcasing the potential for even quicker laps as the session progressed. The mid-session saw Nissan’s Oliver Rowland and the Jaguars of Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy making their intentions clear, with Rowland particularly eager to shine at Nissan’s home event.
Despite a moment of frustration with a slower Maserati driver, Rowland managed to secure top positions during the session, signalling Nissan’s strong performance on home soil. However, as the session neared its conclusion, it was Mitch Evans who surged ahead, setting a blistering lap of 1:19.329s to take the top spot.
Evans Leads, Rowland and Gunther in Pursuit
Evans’ late-session heroics saw him finish FP2 as the fastest driver, with Rowland securing the second-fastest time, narrowly behind. Maximilian Günther, known for pulling out strong performances in the final moments of sessions, secured the third spot, proving once again his ability to deliver under pressure.
