Verstappen feels “safe” in Mexico despite need for bodyguards

Max Verstappen has reassured he feels safe at Mexico despite the need of bodyguards blaming “made-up” Perez rivalry.

Receiving a tough reception in Austin, Verstappen is expecting worse in Mexico. Booed by Perez fans on the podium, Red Bull have stated the need for bodyguards for the championship winner.

Mexico is one of the busiest paddocks in the calendar and has been seen with two bodyguards so far.

However, Verstappen was keen to suggest that it’s not for security but ease.

He said: “I mean why not? I have of course, a bit more security here. But there are always a few countries around the world where it’s very busy, also here in the paddock.

“Last year, it was really, really busy to get from your hospitality to the garage. And it just helps also to make it a little but smoother on track, off track, travel from your hotel, and stuff like that.

“I feel very safe. I mean [on Wednesday] I had a while marketing day, an it’s honestly a great reception here like I always had. So yeah, it’s just good to be back.”

Verstappen is seen a key rival of Perez’s to fans and a large block to a Perez win.

“That’s made up. Checo and I, we get along really well. For us, I don’t think there is any rivalry.”

Although the relationship has seen a few dents in the past years, Verstappen insists they are as close as ever.

Asked about if there is an intense rivalry, he said: “That’s made up. Checo and I, we get along really well. For us, I don’t think there is any rivalry.

“Of course, as a driver on track you always try to be first or be faster, but I think we have a lot of respect for each other, and we appreciate each other’s performances.”

In expectation of this race, Mexican race promoters have launched a campaign. Named #racespect, it hopes to encourage good behaviour from fans this weekend.

On the campaign, Verstappen said: “I think it’s a good thing that it maybe starts here now, but it’s not only here.

“I think in general, the behaviour of the crowd in some places, I think can be a bit better. For example, in Austin, maybe it was a bit towards me, but in general, I think the behaviour of supporting your favourite driver is fine. But then I think you also have to respect the competition.”

Verstappen will look to take his 16th win this season this weekend, breaking his own record set last year.
