In an electrifying weekend at Circuit of The Americas (COTA), the 2023 United States Grand Prix roared to life, attracting a crowd of 432,000 passionate fans. While this number marked a slight dip from the previous year’s 440,000 attendees, the excitement on and off the track remained unparalleled.
On-Track Thrills
Race enthusiasts witnessed thrilling moments as F1 embraced the Sprint format. Max Verstappen, the newly-crowned World Champion, showcased his prowess by winning Saturday’s Sprint from pole position. The excitement continued on Sunday when Verstappen triumphed in the Grand Prix, starting from sixth on the grid, securing his 50th Grand Prix victory.
Supporting Races
Beyond the F1 action, the weekend featured Marta Garcia’s historic win in the all-female F1 Academy series, adding another layer of excitement to the event. Additionally, Masters Historic and Porsche Carrera Cup North America added their flair to the weekend’s racing spectacle.
COTA Music Festival
COTA’s reputation for outstanding musical performances held strong. The Killers rocked the stage after Friday’s qualifying session, setting the tone for the weekend. On Saturday, Queen, featuring Adam Lambert, mesmerized the audience after the Sprint, creating an unforgettable atmosphere at the venue.
Attendance Trends and Future Races
COTA’s attendance journey has been remarkable since F1’s arrival in 2012. While the figures experienced fluctuations, concerts have remained a crowd-puller. Despite the addition of new races in the United States, including the Miami Grand Prix in 2022 and the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix, COTA maintained its strong fanbase.
Although the 2023 United States Grand Prix fell short of the attendance records set by the British Grand Prix and the Australian Grand Prix this year, the fervour of the American fans was undeniable. As the season progresses, with races in Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Las Vegas, and Abu Dhabi on the horizon, Formula 1 is poised to witness a collective attendance exceeding six million across all 22 races in 2023, reflecting the sport’s enduring global appeal.
