After today’s race at Hungaroring, Mercedes’ boss, Toto Wolff discussed Red Bull’s pace and made an interesting comparison, suggesting that they appear so far ahead that the rest of the grid seems to be driving F2 cars.
“We were quick in terms of the F2 pack,” Wolff added. “The F1 car won by 34 seconds.

As Max achieved his seventh consecutive win this season, showcasing an incredible lead over the rest of the grid, his consistent performances have been evident throughout the season. Notably, Sergio Perez also delivered an outstanding performance, earning the “driver of the day” title by climbing from P9 to the third spot on the podium β a feat we’ve witnessed a few times this season. Toto’s statement suggesting that Red Bull’s performance makes the rest of the grid look like they’re racing F2 cars does hold some weight.
Mercedes being the second fastest car?
Despite securing pole position in Qualifying, Lewis unfortunately lost the lead in turn 1 as Max, along with the two McLarens, overtook him. Initially, Toto believed that, following Lewis’s pole position, Mercedes had the second-fastest car on the track, and with a stronger start, Lewis could have secured second place. Toto also mentioned the lack of tire preparation at the camp, which added to the disappointing end. However, this race has served as a wake-up call, highlighting the considerable pace advantage that Red Bull has over Mercedes.
“I think we had the second quickest car today, but the result doesn’t show it. In theory we had the second quickest car, and we didn’t monetise on it today, and that’s always disappointing.

However, Mercedes had the opportunity to highlight their car by George’s fantastic performance, as he climbed from P18 to an impressive P6 finish!
When asked about the car, Hamilton pointed out that they have a lot to work on and need to keep pushing. He had also mentioned the McLarens as they too have gotten ahead of them.
“We have a lot of work to do, we are a long way off beating Red Bull in a race, and now weβre behind the McLarens.”
