The era of Dutch domination in Formula 1 is boring, according to many fans.
With mad Max leading the championship by 110 points, having won 9/11 races, is the Verstappen era deterring fans from the sport?
Verstappen is smashing records left right & centre just to keep things interesting.
Whilst we can all respect Max’s success…is it getting boring?
Would you rather watch paint dry than see Max win the next 11 races?
But Max isn’t the first to dominate & certainly won’t be the last.
Think:
Schumacher, Vettel, Hamilton.
Are we being too harsh on this era of Dutch domination? Or is social media simply amplifying the same discontent?
Did we get bored of Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps or Serena Williams? Or did we celebrate their greatness?
Will We Lose New Fans?
Salesforce estimates that Formula 1 has over 500 millions fans, 1/3 of which became fans in the last 4 years. Meaning that a huge chunk of fans arrived when we were treated to the incredibly tense 2021 season.
So of course, 2023 in comparison is boring…
Whilst the British GP certainly spiced things up with McLaren (Lando Norris) on the podium. Is it the fight out front that fans really want to see?
Having one driver/team dominate is not exactly ‘good’ for the sport however there is only so much Formula 1 can do without manufacturing the championships.
The mid field battles have certainly been spicy but without battles for the win, is it enough to keep fans engaged?
After Hamilton stole pole position in Hungary by 0.003 seconds there was a glimmer of hope. But the Hungarian GP quickly became a snooze fest.
Arguably, the most ‘exciting’ headline was ‘Lando Norris breaks Max Verstappen’s trophy‘.
So whilst we all dread the summer break and twiddle our thumbs every Sunday, perhaps the break is exactly what the other teams need to get back on their A game.
Or will talks of engine equalisation be welcomed?
It’s a tough predicament for Formula 1 to be in.
Do nothing and risk losing fans.
Do something and risk losing fans.
