Ever since 2006, Marshall has been the backbone of Red Bull’s success, joining them during their sophomore year in Formula 1. After a decade of being their chief designer, he took on the esteemed role of chief engineering officer in 2016.
McLaren has snatched up Marshall to become their “technical director, engineering and design.” However, don’t be fooled by Red Bull’s statement. They slyly mentioned that Marshall will actually be taking over as McLaren’s chief designer, a position he already held at Red Bull from 2006 to 2016.
But that’s not all! McLaren has been busy restructuring their technical team, and Marshall’s arrival is just the tip of the iceberg. Neil Houldey, has been bumped up to the role of deputy technical director, engineering and design.
Come January 1st, 2024, Marshall will join McLaren alongside another star signing, Ferrari’s very own David Sanchez. He will take on the role of technical director for car concept and performance.
A Key Member of the team
Red Bull won’t be dancing with joy at Marshall’s departure. He’s been a driving force behind their Formula 1 triumphs, including the glorious back-to-back championships from 2010 to 2013 and the recent domination with Max Verstappen.
McLaren’s team principal, Andreas Stella, couldn’t contain his excitement over snatching up Marshall, stating, “We’ve been nurturing our internal talent and adding fresh blood to our ranks. Marshall’s addition will solidify our reputation for top-tier technical excellence and pave the way for designing winning F1 cars.”
“People and culture are our most important resource. We have recently invested and worked towards developing and empowering the internal talents available at McLaren, and we already perceive and measure the positive impact. In parallel, we have been strengthening our roster by bringing new talents on board.
“The list was already strong and encouraging, and the addition of a high-end and skilled individual like Rob will further consolidate our ability to establish the highest technical standards at McLaren and be in condition to design winning F1 cars.”
Andreas Stella’s Statement on Rob Marshall joining the McLaren team
Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, bid farewell to Marshall, recognizing his immense contributions and wishing him the best in his new endeavor.
“His work on the generation of cars that gave us four incredible championship doubles between 2010 and 2013 was truly outstanding. In the years since he has continued to be a key figure at the team and in 2016 took on the broader role of chief engineering officer which has seen him involved in other projects across the business.
“His influence will be missed but once again we thank him for all he has done and wish him the very best in his new role.”
