TV Coverage for this weekends Monaco GP, which had previously managed by Tele Monte Carlo, will now be controlled by Formula 1. This will be one of the first times that the “world feed” had been managed solely by Formula 1.

Why The Change?

Traditionally, Monaco’s on track feed was produced by Tele Monte Carlo (TMC), a Monaco based TV Channel, however Formula 1 wanted to bring the broadcast back “in-house” and as such this was added to the new agreement between Automobile Club de Monaco and Formula 1.

In the past, the Monaco GP production would not be up for discussion as ACM would use the “Jewel in the Crown” status that the Monaco GP had to their advantage, however this status has weakened somewhat in recent years, with Formula 1 cars becoming larger, reducing the racing action on the Sunday.

Liberty Media, Formula 1’s commercial rights holders made it clear that Monaco’s position on the calendar is not as assured as it has been in the past.

The fact that Monaco GP is not guaranteed a place on the calendar was part of the reason that Formula 1 was able to take back control of the broadcast as part of the new agreement.

Issues with the Broadcast

TMC’s production of the Monaco GP weekend has come into question in the past, with some questionable decisions, including cutting away from on track action to show another driver taking a corner on their own.

Formula 1 will hope that the production will be more consistent with other race weekends. Question will be if the fans watching the race notice anything.
