After much speculation and discussions, Formula 1 has announced a new sprint format for the Sprint Weekends, reducing the amount of Free Practice Sessions and turning Saturday into “Sprint Day”

The New System
The new system, which will be used at all Sprint weekends will now follow this schedule:
Friday
- Free Practice 1 (Only FP session of the weekend)
- Qualifying for Grand Prix
Saturday
- Sprint Qualifying (shorter with mandated tire compounds per section)
- Sprint Race
Sunday
- Grand Prix

Sprint Shootout
Qualifying for the Sprint will be called the Sprint Shootout, a shorter version of Grand Prix Qualifying. The session will still be spilt into the now traditional Q1, Q2 and Q3, however the sessions will be shorter and with a mandated tire compound. Q1 will run for 12 minutes and use the Medium compound, Q2 will be 10 Minutes with the Medium Compound retained and the Q3 will run for just 8 minutes and use the Soft Compound tire.
Points will remain the same, with 8 points for the win, 7 for second 6 for third down to 1 point for eighth.
Rules and Regulations defined and clarified
Due the the changes regarding the Sprint weekend, Formula 1 has also clarified how drivers will serve penalties.
- Penalties incurred during Free Practice and/or Friday Qualifying will carry over to the race on Sunday
- Any Penalties incurred during the Sprint Shootout will carry over to the Sprint
- Any Penalties incurred during the Sprint will be carried over to the Race.
Additional Elements for 2023
Finally, at the F1 commission Meeting, there were discussions regarding power unit usage, with approval given to increase the number of Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), Turbocharger, MGU-H, and MGU-K elements from 3 to 4 for 2023 only.
