The 2025 Italian Grand Prix in Monza unfolded with a masterclass from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who converted pole into a commanding win, his third of the season, while Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri completed a McLaren podium lockout amid late drama and strategic intrigue.

Race Start

At the drop of the lights, Lando Norris exploded off the line and took the inside line advantage, but went on the grass and Verstappen defended. While Norris remained on racing line, Verstappen cut the corner, resulting in an order to give up the position to avoid a penalty.

However, he was able to regain position on lap 4, thanks to DRS, and began steadily pulling away from the McLaren duo in a display of dominance.

Shortly after, Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc locked horns for third. Leclerc got ahead under braking but immediately slipped wide at Lesmo 1, where Piastri swung around the outside to reclaim the position in a flash of audacious skill.

Nico Hulkenberg was left disappointed after a retirement on the formation lap, despite qualifying 12th.

Mid-Race Interruptions

Strife occurred between Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon. On Lap 2, Stroll was forced off the track by Ocon and rejoined unsafely. The stewards assessed Ocon a 5-second time penalty for forcing an opponent off the track.

Fernando Alonso’s hopes for a top 10 finish was shattered when he had to retire on lap 25 due to what he confirmed was a suspension failure. This added to Aston Martin’s tough season, with Alonso visibly frustrated as he stepped out of the car.

The mid-race lull at Monza was shattered when Ollie Bearman and Carlos Sainz clashed at the Roggia chicane. A misjudged maneuver sent both spinning, scattering debris across the track. Race stewards eventually slotted a 10-second penalty onto Bearman for causing the collision.

McLaren Team Orders Resurface

On laps 47-48, Piastri pitted first, followed by Norris, who endured a sluggish stop of 5.9s and lost track position. McLaren then implemented team orders, asking Piastri to swap, with the promise he’d be free to race. He hesitated initially but complied, despite stating on radio that “a slow pit stop is a part of racing”.

Closing Stages: Verstappen Cruises Home

After Norris’s restart, Verstappen re-established a commanding lead. His final margin was a staggering 19.207s, comfortably ahead of the McLarens, who completed the podium.

Further back, Leclerc secured fourth for Ferrari and George Russell held fifth for Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton was able to recover to sixth despite starting from tenth.

Albon delivered seventh for Williams, Bortoleto scored points with eighth, and Kimi Antonelli was demoted to ninth post-race due to penalties.
